Before restoration, years of chemical etching and everyday use left the Carrara marble with a dull appearance and reduced reflectivity. The etched spots — visible as lighter, cloudy patches — were most concentrated around the sink and food preparation areas.
After professional honing and polishing, the marble regained a consistent polished finish, allowing the natural veining and color variation to stand out once again. An impregnating sealer was applied to protect against future staining without altering the stone's appearance or breathability.
This luxury penthouse featured Carrara marble countertops that had served as the centerpiece of the kitchen for more than six years. Daily use had gradually reduced the stone's polished finish.
Acidic foods such as lemon juice, tomato sauce, and red wine, along with household cleaners containing vinegar, created chemical etching across the surface. Fine scratches from cookware and everyday use further reduced the marble's clarity and reflectivity.
The homeowner had attempted DIY polishing products without success and was considering replacing the countertops — a project estimated to cost between $7,000 and $12,000 or more for a luxury penthouse with premium slab selection and custom fabrication.
Carrara marble is composed primarily of calcium carbonate, which reacts with acidic substances. Even common kitchen items like lemon juice, vinegar, wine, and tomato sauce can create chemical etching that permanently dulls the polished finish until the surface is professionally restored. Unlike surface stains or dirt, etching is physical damage to the stone itself — it cannot be cleaned away and requires mechanical abrasion to correct. Because the etching had not penetrated deeply into the marble, full grinding wasn't necessary. A progressive diamond honing process allowed us to remove the damaged surface while preserving as much of the original stone as possible.
A pH-neutral stone cleaner removed all residues, oils, and contaminants so we could accurately assess the full extent of the damage before beginning mechanical work.
We removed a thin layer of damaged marble to eliminate chemical etching and surface scratches while exposing fresh, undamaged stone. The goal at this stage is leveling — bringing the entire surface to a uniform plane below the deepest etches.
Each successive grit removes the scratch pattern left by the previous one, gradually rebuilding the surface finish. Skipping grits at this stage would leave visible abrasion marks — the progression must be sequential for a uniform result.
The final polishing stage develops the reflective sheen and brings out the depth and color saturation of the marble. The stone achieves a clarity of reflection that matches or restores the original polished appearance.
A solvent-based penetrating sealer was applied, bonding within the stone's pore structure at a molecular level. Unlike topical coatings that sit on the surface and can yellow or peel, an impregnating sealer protects against water and oil-based stains while allowing the stone to remain breathable and natural in appearance. The countertop's polished finish was fully restored, bringing back the natural depth, clarity, and reflective qualities of the Carrara marble. All etching, scratches, and wear patterns were eliminated. The impregnating sealer provides ongoing protection — the surface requires only routine cleaning with pH-neutral products to maintain its appearance.
